TANGRAM lANDSCAPES AT ORTICOLARIO

Tangram Landscapes is the site-specific installation curated by Urges for Orticolario 2024. The installation, designed by architect Matteo Fraschini, reflects on the theme of the soil as a thick and modeled surface: a stage/scene for the dialogue between man and nature.

It is therefore conceived as a comparison made of mutual, continuous and attentive listening. A succession of landscapes evoked through different soil treatments refers to the uninterrupted process of modifying the earth to make it habitable.

Description

Inserted inside the Ala Lario, alongside the guest of honor Michele De Lucchi, the installation addresses the theme of the earth, chosen for the edition of Orticolario. The relationship between soil and the built environment, one of the main themes of contemporary debate, in Tangram Landscapes becomes an opportunity for reflection on the conscious use of resources and on circularity.

Like a Tangram, geometric lines divide the space and suggest unexpected connections between objects, materials and textures recognisable in everyday use. Hand bricks rediscover the Roman tradition of opus spicatum, metal armatures and electro-welded nets act as supports for climbing plants and recycled gravels create draining soils for highly cemented areas. Thus a mosaic of apparently discontinuous fragments is stitched together into a coherent whole by the use of greenery.

The installation also includes some phytodepurative plants, such as cabbages, ferns and marsh reeds, which are also essential in soil regeneration processes.

The installation invites a continuous discovery of the elements that compose it, both in the search for the materials used and in the recognition of the recreated environments. In an ideal dialogue between sky and earth, the green crystals rise, vertical structures in which the ground becomes light and transparent. Conceived as kaleidoscopes, they invite the observation of nature from unusual and ever new points of view.

The installation is completed by the decoration of the ceiling with light triangular frames that reflect the ground below, giving the room a delicate light.
